We hear a lot these days about self-love and self-care, but in the busyness of everyday life, it can be hard to find time to show yourself a little love. But just like you practice good hygiene by brushing your teeth and washing your hair, it’s essential to take steps to show yourself as much care as you show your loved ones.
Taking care of yourself can look different for everyone, but there are some basic actions you can take to love yourself a little more!
Learn what causes you pain and how to avoid it.
Take note of what things cause you emotional pain, whether it’s rejection, failure, or anger. Identify what you can control and determine ways to mitigate or improve those situations. And if it’s something you can’t control, focus on controlling your response. Reacting healthily to a negative situation can have a huge impact on your mental health.
Give yourself a break.
It’s so important to show compassion to yourself, just as you would to a child or friend. This is especially key after you’ve experienced rejection or failure, when you may find yourself struggling with your sense of self-worth. Be kind to yourself and don’t let negative experiences shatter your self-esteem.
Make time for the people you love.
Loneliness can quickly and severely damage your mental and emotional health. We all need time alone, but we also need time with friends and family, and finding a healthy balance is essential. Take time to connect with those you’re closest to, even if it’s just a phone call. And consider joining local groups that share your interests, whether it’s a book club, a class at your gym, or a group at your house of worship. My closest group of friends is my book club—and they have been for the last 18 years!
Enjoy some “me time.”
As much as you need time with loved ones, you need time on your own simply to relax and rejuvenate. Choose an activity you enjoy doing or pick up a new hobby. Even better, get some exercise while you’re at it and take a long walk or go hiking. Even if you only have a few minutes, spend a little time each day reflecting and checking in with yourself.
Take care of your body.
A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your physical needs. Be sure to get plenty of sleep each night and not to over-exert yourself. Stay hydrated and try to maintain a healthy diet. And don’t forget to work in some physical activity to keep both your body and mind in tip-top shape!
